Cow type needs to reflect farm
SENIOR beef and sheep technologist at Greenmount College, Willie McLauchlan believes cow type should reflect farm type.
A typical breeding programme that would suit suckler herds would begin with a Limousin cross Friesian cow. This could be crossed with either a Saler or Simmental.
He said Aberdeen Angus, Here-ford, Shorthorn or Saler bulls were good crosses for tradional hill farms to use, retaining their hardiness. But lowland farms could use more Continental breeding and keep cows that were 50-75% Continental. *
