Crisis meeting packed

ABOUT 250 sheep farmers filled the venue in Perth on Monday night for the latest in a series of sheep crisis meetings organised by the Scottish NFU.

Union president, Jim Walker, said it was quite unacceptable for UK environment minister, Michael Meacher, to say there was no money for a cull ewe scheme because of spending limits set by the previous administration.

"That excuse is wearing a bit thin after 28 months in office. It is also insulting for farm minister, Nick Brown, to say that todays crisis in the cull ewe market has been caused by oversupply.

"We can hold up our hands to some carry-over of ewes that were worthless last year. But the real problem then and now lies with the extra costs of SRM (specified risk material) removal and being left with split carcasses, which the French do not want." &#42
