Dales bidders in rush to buy local favourite

SWALEDALE breeders are anticipating a record-breaking autumn sale season later this year, but trade this spring is still commanding good prices.

A video sale organised by the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Assoc-iation at Hawes Market, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, showed good breeding sheep will be worth big money later this year.

Bidding twice reach 5000gns for shearling ewes, with the first deal being struck between R Marwood and Son and well-known breeders Laurie Raine and Sons.

Sharing the top price tag was another from the same flock bought by Stainforth buyer SA Raine, while a third ewe from Messrs Marwood realised £4000 to FC and M Walker.

Also at £4000 was a shearling ewe from RW Clarkson and Son, bought by Messrs Brogden, who lost one of the breeds most famous flocks during the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Best trade for gimmer hoggs was £3500 given by GA and DE Slack for one from G Calvert and Sons. Tom Robinson and Sons, of Slaidburn, Lancs, sold a ewe at £3200 to JD Alderson and another at £3000 to Messrs Brogden. Another ewe consigned by R Marwood and Son was bought for £3200 by FC and M Walker.

Averages: Ewes £1402; gimmer shearlings £1983; and hoggs £930 (Hawes Farmers Auction Mart). &#42
