Death a shock for Scottish farming

SCOTLANDS dairy industry was stunned this week by the announcement of the sudden death of Ayrshire dairy farmer Ian Kerr.

Mr Kerr, who farmed at Newmilns, Ayrshire, was 47 and married with two sons and a daughter. He had been chairman of the Scottish NFUs milk committee for the past two years and also represented the union on the National Dairy Council.

Scottish NFU president Jim Walker said: "This has come as a terrible shock. Ians quiet common sense and careful diplomacy have been great strengths for the union, and a huge help to me personally.

"We have all lost a good friend as well as a colleague."

Mr Kerr had intended to run for vice-president of the union this year, but changed his mind when the foot-and-mouth crisis began, believing it was better to allow the existing office holder team to continue rather than divert attention by holding an election. &#42
