Deedes calls for modern-day AG Street

BRITISH agriculture would benefit from a modern-day AG Street, writes columnist Bill Deedes in The Daily Telegraph today.

In a column titled, Fewer things are sadder than the funeral of a farm, Mr Deedes says that farmers are following farm workers off the land.

“What farming most needs today is someone in the mould of AG Street, a prophet crying from the wilderness,” writes the former Telegraph editor and MP.

AG Street was a farmer and journalist writing at the time of the last great depression in agriculture during the 1930s.

“One or two of his books read as convincingly today as they did 50 years ago,” concludes Mr Deedes.
