Denmark resists pig-farmers’ call for help

THE Danish Government has rejected pleas by Danish pig farmers for help in tiding them over the current crisis in the industry, reports the Financial Times.

The Danish market is currently over-supplied with prices running at below the cost of production.

Denmarks 20,000 pig farmers produce more than 20 million pigs per year.

The pig farmers are calling for short term aid including state guarantees for operating costs and a possible six-month moratorium on bank loan payments.

Henrik Dam Kristensen, the agriculture minister, said the farmers had created their own problems by excessive over production.
