Devon sale is Adams family exit

THE sale of Overlake Farm in Northlew, near Okehampton, Devon, will bring to an end four generations of occupation by the Adams family.

Farmer Dennis Adams is set to retire and says his son has decided to pursue a career away from the farm. The decision to sell the 164-acre former dairy unit is one currently being contemplated by a number of producers with children who no longer see milk as the way forward.

But Kivells agent David Kivell, who is handling the sale, reckons there are still plenty of buyers in the county looking for farms. "Foot-and-mouth compensation has certainly beefed up the land market here."

He also feels that Overlake, despite going out of milk a number of years ago, will appeal to dairy farmers looking to expand. "Often a unit with no milking parlour can be considered more attractive because people dont like having to rip out the existing equipment if they want to upgrade."

On the market for £650,000, the holding comes with a spacious, five-bedroomed house and Mr Kivell says he is valuing the pastureland at £1500/acre. &#42
