Drought helps Guyanan sugar
A PROTRACTED drought that ended last year, which damaged most the countrys agriculture, has benefited Guyanas sugar industry.
The yield from this years harvest, which ends next month, will surpass the industrys target of 300,000 tonnes, according to the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation.
Production this year had passed the 255,000 tonnes produced last year.
Guyana will be able to meet its quota commitments to the European Union and the USA “comfortably” and to ship on to members of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), said the trade ministry.
