Ear-tag claim fine

A GLOS-BASED ear-tag supplying company director who claimed to have MAFF approval for the supply of primary cattle tags, has been fined £8000 under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

Glos Trading Standards estimates that about 40,000 primary tags were supplied illegally by Roderick Francis company Cooper Marketing, which only had MAFF approval to sell secondary tags.

During a six-month period in 1998 nearly 300 farmers bought the tags and had to be re-supplied. The MAFF database which records the unique primary tag number also had to be corrected and took six months to rectify. In addition to the fine, Mr Francis will also have to pay £2291 in costs. &#42
