A BRUSSELS directive could mean a massive increase in the cost of posting a letter for country dwellers, it has been claimed.

And daily collections and deliveries could be a thing of the past, if the European Commission proposals are introduced, reports the Daily Mail.

The leaked proposals would allow private courier companies into a much larger sector of the business post market.

A Post Office spokesman warned that “something would have to give” and that would mean higher charges for letters to and from the countryside.

The EWU proposals are due to be published later in May.
