BRITISH scientists have called the use of sewage sludge in animal feed as “repugnant and illegal” but believe heat treatment would kill any serious pathogenic micro-organisms.

Nick Brown, the agriculture minister, published the advice of his scientists yesterday.

The Joint Food Safety and Standards Group gives a clean bill of health to French food products on sale in this country.

But in spite of this, the European Commission is to bring forward proposals next month to stop the possibility of animal feed manufacturers using sewage sludge.

David Byrne, consumer protection minister, told the European parliament yesterday that the proposals were expected around 8 November.

European Union veterinary inspectors last week found that French animal feed manufacturers had for years been using sewage sludge obtained from animal rendering plants.
