EU, USA seek common ground on trade

US president Bill Clinton and Romano Prodi, the European Commission president, are meeting today (Friday).

This is in a in a bid to build common ground on trade in the wake of the failed World Trade Organisation conference in Seattle earlier this month.

The two sides are not expected to make significant progress in resolving outstanding trade disagreements on issues such as agriculture, biotechnology and beef exports.

But the USA is said to be optimistic that that a breakthrough may be possible on the banana dispute following a new proposal by Caribbean banana exporters.
