European Union may cut mushroom jobs
BRITAINS organic mushroom growers face a new threat – the introduction of unworkable European Union (EU) legislation.
The EU says the straw used to grow organic mushrooms must come from organic crops, even though organic straw is in short supply in Britain.
The rules are due to be phased in over three years, starting this autumn. Producers claim the rules could put hundreds of jobs at risk.
Ironically, last week the UK Government published proposals to boost subsidies by as much as seven times for some farmers wishing to go organic.
