‘Expand WTO agenda’, urges Fischler
By FWi staff
THE next round of World Trade Organisation talks should expand its remit to include animal welfare and product labelling, claims EU farm commissioner Franz Fischler.
Speaking at the international Green Week in Berlin, Mr Fischler said European consumers were interested in more than import taxes and export subsidies.
“We take the view that the new WTO round should not be confined to agriculture and services,” he said. “Other topics should be included.
“The EU ought to be pressing, at international level, for better food safety and quality standards.”
