Export hopes for barley surplus

By FWi staff

EX-FARM barley is worth about £70/t after trading at a slight premium over wheat for much of the last season this millennium.

Production totalling 6.7 million tonnes created a minimum exportable surplus of 2.2m tonnes and overseas demand should mean that most is sold.

For some inland growers, however, intervention may be marginally more attractive, and a further 100,000t could be added to the 25,000t already offered.

Prices are dictated by intervention, and this has slipped by £6/t since the start of the season due to the strong Pound.
