Factories fight mystery hitch
BRITISH Sugar admits that it is baffled by the filtration problems causing factory shut-downs this season, particularly at Wissington.
"We just do not know why it is so bad," admits the companys Karl Carter.
"Quality is exceptional, with non-sugars at an all-time low and purity very good." Despite that, factories are working on a knife-edge, with 5-6 hour stoppages if filtration levels move beyond accepted tolerances.
Changes were being made to processing last week, with BSs Robin Limb hoping the problem would be cracked soon.
"If we can get Wissington right there is still a very good chance of having a very good season," he said at Beet UK. *
