Factory accreditation raises fishmeal hopes

HOPES that fishmeal will be permitted in ruminant rations have been raised, following the first Feed Materials Assurance Scheme accreditation of a UK fishmeal factory.

The UK Agricultural Supply Trade Association has audited United Fish Products (UFP) Aberdeen factory according to strict guidelines for animal feeds of aquatic products, says UFPs Helge Korsager. This included sustainability of fish sources, storage, transport and traceability. Products are also tested to ensure freedom from land animal proteins, he adds.

"We hope this will help in the process of getting the current precautionary EU ban on fishmeal in ruminants feed lifted.

"Having accreditation will also give feed manufacturers the knowledge that UFP products meet the requirements of the UKASTA Feed Assurance Scheme." &#42
