Farm leaders want strong £ summit talks

FARMING leaders and representatives of allied industries are to press for an urgent meeting with the Chancellor and other government ministers to explain the effects of the strong £ on the rural economy.

Their decision follows a London meeting on Tue (Apr 28), hosted by the NFU, to discuss the impact of the farming crisis and its effects on the countryside economy.

The meeting also agreed to urge the government to adopt an economic policy which will allow the maintenance of a lower £ and interest rates without compromising the control of inflation.

Meanwhile, delegates agreed to gather more information on the effects of the farming crisis and to meet again in the near future.

More than 20 delegates attended the meeting including representatives from the Country Landowners Association, NFU of Scotland, British Agrochemical Association, Agriculture, Transport and General Workers Union and UKASTA, Deloitte and Touche Agriculture, Livestock Auctioneers Association and the Road Haulage Association.
