Scotland to learn about support payment plans

Farmers in Scotland will next week learn more about the future direction of agricultural support payments.

The final report of Brian Pack’s Inquiry into Future Support for Agriculture in Scotland will be published on Wednesday, 3 November.

Mr Pack was asked to make recommendations to the Scottish government on how financial support to agriculture and rural development could best be tailored to deliver the Scottish government’s purpose of sustainable economic growth.

An interim report was produced in June 2010 which included a number of short-term recommendations.

One of the suggestions was a crack down on Scotland’s so-called ‘slipper farmers’.

NFU Scotland said its members would get a chance to hear Mr Pack’s vision first- hand at a meeting on Monday 8 November.

NFU Scotland chief executive James Withers said: “Brian’s interim report, published in June, has already identified a number of short-term measures some of which could be in place as soon as 2011.

“This final report will map out more fully what he believes Scottish agriculture needs the forthcoming reform of the CAP to deliver and I look forward to reading it.

“Debate around CAP reform is developing considerable momentum and the Pack report is an important part of securing the right deal from the CAP negotiations for Scottish farmers.”
