Farm savers pick OSR
FARMERS are switching to farm-saved oilseed rape seed in a big way, judging by demand for glucosinolate testing.
NIABs Labtest service had received three times more samples by the end of July than the same time last year.
Chemistry lab manager Huw Jones believes an early harvest and Agenda 2000 area aid proposals mean farmers see harvest 1999 as their last significant rapeseed area.
Two thirds of samples are passing the 18 micromole/g glucosinolate limit, slightly better than last year, he says. Apex has been the dominant variety tested closely followed by Contact.
It makes sense to apply initially for the £18.80/ sample XRF test and only use the £43.10 HPLC test if the sample fails the XRF, advises Mr Jones.
