Farmer fined for animal cruelty

A FARMER who kept pregnant ewes and new-born lambs in a pen containing rotting carcasses has been fined £3000 and sentenced to 120 hours community service.

Michael Anson, 48, of Mayfield, East Sussex, left 56 sheep to clamber over four dead ewes – one with a lamb only partly delivered – for more than a week.

Lewis magistrates were told that 70 lambs were kept in a filthy neighbouring pen with no hay and water that had not been changed for three to five weeks.

Mr Anson pleaded guilty to causing pain and distress, amid other charges.
