Farmer killed by felled tree

An elderly farmer has been crushed and killed by a tree, which he felled on his farm in Northern Ireland.

Ernest Emery (73), who lived in a remote area south of Castlederg, County Tyrone, is understood to have felled the tree on Friday (7 February).

Although he had finished the job and switched off his chainsaw the trunk rolled over, trapping him beneath it.

Emergency services arrived later that evening after the alarm was raised but they were unable to save Mr Emery’s life.

A spokeswoman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said crews from Castlederg and Omagh stations attended the “critical incident” shortly after 9.30pm on 7 February.

“Firefighters used chainsaws and other equipment to release the man. Sadly the man lost his life in the incident,” she added.
