Farmers demand action to save
FARM leaders are lobbying Parliament to save the pig industry.
Ben Gill, president of the National Farmers Union, said many producers are losing £20 on every pig they sell due to a glut of pork and cheap imported meat.
The plight of the industry is due to be discussed at an adjournment debate in the House of Commons. Farmers are angry that after investing more than £220 million in improving standards over the past seven years, supermarkets are selling cheap foreign pig products produced under inferior conditions.
Gill is leading a deputation of 50 pig producers to Parliament.
