Farmers demonstrate in Poland and Ukraine

POLISH farmers staged a sit-in at the finance ministry in Warsaw to demand higher prices for their grain. The 30 farmers also asked for guarantees that all of their grain would be bought.

The Individual Farmers Solidarity union members demanded more subsidies for agriculture and the abolition of VAT for farmers.

  • In Ukraine, hundreds of farmers demonstrated this week, calling for the Kiev authorities to enable them to buy and sell land freely. They also want a system of grants for farming needs.
  • Russian farmers sowed 90.9 million ha (224.61m acres) for all crops in 1998, a fall of 6% on the previous year.
