‘Farmers ignoring Millennium bug’

BRITAINS food supplies are in jeopardy because farmers are not taking the threat from the Millennium bug serious enough, the government said yesterday.

Cold stores, glasshouses, milking machines and feeding systems are poorly protected.

The government warns that animals and poultry might die, fruit and vegetables could be destroyed and food distribution systems destroyed.

The bug can disable computers because they fail to recognise the year 2000.

The ministry of agriculture and the National Farmers Union of England and Wales have produced a range of free guides to help farmers to identify problem areas.
