A NATIONAL association has been created to promote farmers markets and establish the rules under which they operate.
It was formed at a seminar in Bath organised by the Soil Association and Bath Environment Centre and attended by representatives of 14 of the 16 farmers markets already operating. At least another 22 markets have been arranged to start this year and the list continues to grow.
The National Association of Farmers Markets will serve as a central source of information and practical help for those interested in setting up markets. It hopes to raise funds, provide training, and create an effective national movement.
Steve Bendle of Bath Environment Centre, which was a partner in setting up the Bath farmers market in 1997, said the markets helped keep money in the local economy and they were not a threat to existing markets. Mr Bendle can be contacted on 01225-460620.
