Farming to polarise between big and small
BRITISH farming will see an increasing polarisation between large, intensive operations and small, diversified operations, according to research by Aberdeen University.
The researchers believe the future shape of the countryside will be determined by a large group of medium-sized farms whose owners will either sell up or expand into large, intensive farms.
The study forecasts that three types of farmer will survive.
There will be small-scale farmers who derive most of their income from other sources; medium-scale farmers who diversify into other activities; and large-scale farmers who buy the 30% of farmers who sell out.
