Fashion shows up in the west

LEADING west country breeders assembled a fashionably-bred collection of Holstein Friesian cattle at Taunton Market for the "Autumn Gold" sale.

Bidding reached 1750gns and, against a background of a firming dairy cattle trade, 85 cows levelled at £858.

And it was the August-calved third calver Barrina Inspiration Scamp 2nd from Salisbury vendors Barry and Georgina Green that led the trade. This daughter of Crichel Inspiration is out of a Crichel Stardust cow and gave 11,880kg in her second lactation. Buyers were W G Wrixon, Wimborne, Dorset.

The same buyers made sure the Greens had a day to remember. They took Barrina Dom Grant Artist 8th, a calved heifer by Dombinator at 1500gns and Barrina Astre Betty, another calved heifer, at 1320gns.

The second calver Ciderhouse Royal Farah from David and Valerie Normans herd at Frome realised 1250gns to Mr and Mrs Bernard Hann, Frome. Farah, by Cracin Royal, was giving 36.8kg on the day.

Herd averages: Barrina (14) £1101; Lilylane (10) £841; Whipton (3) £822; Ciderhouse (33) £818; Dowervale (4) £808; Sanchris (11) £761 and Goldfields (11) £739. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt) &#42
