Finnie upsets farmers with debt comments
SCOTTISH rural affairs minister Ross Finnie has come under attack for describing the latest figures on farm borrowings as “helpful”.
He made the comment after a survey by the Scottish Executive showed that farmers bank debt had fallen by £8 million to £1.058bn.
Jim Walker, president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland, said the minister was trying to generate good news out of what remains a very difficult position for farmers.
He said prices across most commodities were poor. Farmers were borrowing to live rather than invest. The figures confirmed the dire straits of the industry, Walker said.
