Food industry to pay for the Food Standards Agency

THE Government has confirmed it will make the food industry pay for the creation of the Food Standards Agency, which is expected to begin operations in 1999.

Mr Nick Brown, the newly-installed minister for agriculture, said the total cost to industry of running the new agency would not exceed £50 million a year before 2001.

The new MAFF budget will be directed towards environmentally friendly farming, such as organic production, uplands farms and environmentally sensitive areas.
