Food safety is fundamental factor
ASSURED British Meats base line is food safety; it is an integrated food safety assurance scheme covering all 14 sectors of the food chain. The aim is membership of UKAS, the UKs accreditation body.
Standards for livestock markets and the farming sector are in draft form. These are out to consultation with other sectors of the industry before they are finalised. But Clive Dibben, marketing development manager for animal feeds and farms, hopes standards relevant to farmers will be in place before the end of the year. He predicts 80% of producers will support the scheme in three years time. "There are already standards and schemes people can sign up to," he says. "The doorway to ABM is through a farm assurance scheme such as FABBL or FAWL, which we are in discussion with. I would not want to be without assurance both in the short and long term. It is for the benefit of the industry as a whole."
