Forage yields up for project
ADOPTING improved grazing management, as part of the Practice into Profit project, has seen yields from forage increase by 900 litres at Newton Rigg College, Lancs.
The herds 7400-litre cows now produce 3900 litres from forage compared with 3000 litres when the project began three years ago. Most of this increase has come from grazing, with production from grazed grass now reaching 2550 litres a cow compared with 1740 litres in February 1997.
At a Practice into Profit open day on May 3, sponsored by Barclays Bank, British Seed Houses, MAFF, MDC and MLC, producers will hear how the college plans to produce milk at 11p/litre, and how milk yield from grass has been improved.
