France claims ban justified

FRANCE has justified a ban on British beef in the interests of the French consumer. It claims it can impose stricter safety conditions on food than the European Union.

Agriculture minister Jean Glavany said there was “reason for the government to change its mind” following last weeks recommendation by the food agency to retain the ban.

He told the French parliament the government had the right to be “more cautious than the EU” after the doubts raised by the French food agency.

France is to allow British beef to cross French borders.
