From giant chippers to monster cranes
From giant chippers to monster cranes

BIGGER, better and packed with a mouth-watering selection of construction equipment is how the organisers described this years Site Equipment Demonstration SED event which was held at Fen Farm, Wavendon, Bucks last week.
Featuring over 325 trade stands, the annual four-day annual event played host to an array of machinery ranging from monster cranes, 360deg excavators, bull-dozers to gigantic chippers.
Doppstadt used the event to show its industrial shredder which, says the company, can chew its way through anything from green waste to railway sleepers.
Powered by a 430hp Merc engine, the AK 430 Profi is designed to provide councils and contractors with a means of converting industrial organic waste such as scrap timber and tree branches into a valuable compost.
The shredder pulverises waste using a 2.5t hammer mill rotor which rotates at 1065rpm.
The 36 hammers are arranged in four rows on the rotor and each one weighs 14kg.
Material is delivered to the rotor by a 4m long x 1.8m wide conveyor which runs at 1.5m/sec.
A mesh screen at the rear of the machine determines chop length – 150/200mm for green waste or 40mm for wood.
After the screen, material is thrown onto a discharge elevator that can be angled to stockpile waste 3m above the ground.
Price is from £160,000.
From mighty machines to mini monsters, JCB took the opportunity to introduce its range-topping Robot 190 and 1110 skid-steer loaders which respectively replace the 190 and 1105 models. Both loaders are equipped with a single rather than twin arm boom which provides better visibility from the cab and access from a side door.
Enhanced visibility, says JCB, has also been achieved by raising and moving forward the operators seat, with cut-outs added to the cab roof to improve vision of the boom when fully raised.
Use of a single arm boom has also reduced cab height by 40mm (4in), enabling greater clearance when travelling under low-slung doorways.
Power for the 190 and 1110 has been increased from 76hp to 80hp and 80hp to 92hp respectively – outputs which provide a 10% rise in wheel torque, according to JCB. Lift capacities for each loader are 900kg and 1100kg.
To harness extra poke under the bonnet, both loaders can be fitted with 350mm wide rubber tracks which are driven directly from the wheel motors.
JCB says demand for rubber tracked skid steer loaders is increasing and will help to consolidate its 20% share in the UK skid-steer loader market.
Additional upgrades on the loaders include an implement carriage and servo control levers which are compatible for use with Bobcat attachments. Price for the 1110 model is from £21,000 with tracks adding an extra £5500. *
