Gangmasters’ code of practice launched
THE Government publishes new guidelines for gangmasters – who trawl depressed areas of the Midlands recruiting causal pickers and packers – today (Tuesday).
Don Pollard, chairman of the rural, agricultural and allied workers group of the Transport and General Workers Union, says the code of practice agreed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food with the National Farmers Union, is a beginning. But he wants stringent penalties for gangmasters found guilty of wages offences and closer checks by the Home Office on those taking advantage of illegal immigrants and on so-called English language schools.
