Gene crops will feed world – FAO

GENETICALLY modified crops have received the backing of the head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), reports the Financial Times.

Jacques Diouf says new plant and animal varieties are needed to feed a burgeoning world population which is expected to peak at 9 billion.

Mr Diouf predicted that a shortage of land available for cultivation would make it impossible to provide enough food without recourse to genetically modified animals and plants.

The GM issue will be on the agenda at the forthcoming G8 summit in Okinawa and looks set to divide opinion.

Europeans arguing the precautionary principle should be applied while North Americans argue this is a pretext for convert sanctions.
