Global apple production soars
APPLE production by the worlds leading growers is expected to reach a record 45.9m tonnes in the current 1998/99 season, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Large crops in China, the USA, Argentina and Chile will push total output up 4% compared with last season, USDA said in its latest World Apple Situation report.
The crop in the USA, the worlds second largest apple producer, will be 6% bigger than last time at 5m tonnes.
Chile is expected to harvest a record crop of 1m tonnes, 4% higher than last season.
