GM labelling rules in force tomorrow
By FWi staff
NEW powers aimed at enforcing the labelling of foodstuffs containing genetically modified (GM) soya or maize will come into effect tomorrow (Friday).
All outlets selling foods containing GM material that is improperly labelled face prosecution and a £5000 fine, said Food Safety Minister Jeff Rooker.
In a written parliamentary answer, Mr Rooker said the new rules would apply to restaurants, cafes, bakers and delicatessens as well as shops.
“The Government is determined that consumers should be able to choose whether or not to eat genetically modified foods,” he said.
“This includes foods sold in restaurants, cafes and takeaways and not just that available from supermarkets.”
The new rules mean that UK is the first European Union country to take steps to ensure that consumers eating out can choose whether to buy GM food.
