GMtest must cover all

GOVERNMENT plans to test seed for contamination with genetically modified varieties need to cover all seed suppliers and farm saved seed, says the British Society of Plant Breeders.

Testing was proposed by the government following problems earlier this year with GM contaminated Hyola spring oilseed rape seed.

Now the BSPB wants the rule to apply to all seed suppliers. "There are a lot more people bringing seed into the UK than just the big players," says BSPB chairman Tony Guthrie.

"And what about farm-saved seed?" he asks. "Pollen can travel huge distances. So who is to say that farm saved seed could not be contaminated and that it should not be tested too?"
