Good results on Hampshire chalk

IN Hampshire, some growers are 75% through harvest with some notably good results being recorded from chalkland slopes which avoided waterlogging, says Hampshire Arable Systems Steve Cook.

“One or two people are telling us they are having their best ever harvests.

One near Alton reckons he is averaging 4.5t/acre of wheat, over 3t for winter and spring barley, though more spring crop will bring that down a bit, and over 2t/acre of peas.”

Wheat quality is more variable with over-thick crops recording low specific weights, he notes. “But its clearly not all gloom and doom.”
