Good weather and yields pleasing
THE Searby Farming Co has been combining wheat for 10 days. Bill Davey says, “despite dismal prices and prospects, we should be thankful for the weather. The yields are respectful after dreadful autumn conditions.”
“Claire wheat is approaching 4t/acre (9.9t/ha). It was September drilled and weve thrown all the inputs at it, therefore it should do well.” There are 138ha (340 acres) of wheat on the farm. He says Consort and Aardvark should have respectful yields.
Part of the way through 45ha (110 acres) of Optic spring barley, and quality is good, “nitrogen is acceptable and the germination is good. Its better than expected.” It is yielding about 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) which is slightly below the 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre) farm average.
Soil on the farm is based on chalk and is well drained. He expects to be finished by 5 September.
