Government boosting organic, Lords told

THE governments doubling of subsidies for organic farming has encouraged more farmers into organic farming, the House of Lords was told yesterday.

Peers were told the breakthrough came when the government decided to increase organic conversion payments for arable land from £100 to £180 an acre over a five-year period.

The higher payments have encouraged an extra 280 farmers to go organic in the past year under the governments conversion scheme. It has attracted only 400 since it was introduced in 1993.
