Government debates SSSI compensation
THE Government is considering replacing the system of compensation on Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
A consultation paper suggests SSSIs should be replaced with “positive conservation arrangements supported by financial incentives”.
Owners would also be given a right of appeal against decisions by Scottish Natural Heritage to refuse “Potentially Damaging Operations” , or PDOs, where permission currently has to be sought.
