Government departments trawled for BSE clues

WHITEHALL has hired a team of legal troubleshooters to search for evidence that could shed light on the Conservative Governments handling of the BSE affair.

The troubleshooters have been hired to search for memorandums, correspondence and other documents.

Lord Justice Phillips, head of the BSE inquiry, insisted on the independent search. Most of the information is coming from the Ministry of Agriculture and Department of Health. A total of 60,000 documents has been collated as “of interest”.

The findings will govern the line of questioning at the inquiry over the next two months. Senior civil servants will appear before the inquiry in September and about 150 former ministers are scheduled for November and December.
