Government hopes for cut in UK flock
THE government is hoping to get the green light to reduce the size of the UK sheep flock when EU farm ministers meet on Tue, Nov 20.
DEFRA permanent secretary Brian Bender said he hoped for "conclusive negotiations" on the issue of a sheep quota buy-up scheme to reduce sheep numbers.
He told journalists on Wed, Nov 14, that he expects that farm ministers will allow the government to buy sheep quota. Change is needed because the sheepmeat regime encourages farmers to keep too many sheep, he said. *
