Government mistrusted on GMs
THE public believes the government is biased towards the genetically modified food industry, claims a new report.
The Economic and Social Research Council report, which is published today, also says the government has underestimated the intelligence of the public over its GM policies.
The government-funded body says many people believe the government wants GM food to be a success because the biotechnology industry may boost the UK economy.
They say ministers believe their policies were based on sound scientific grounds and treat public resistance as irrational, reports BBC Online.
But the report authors they said peoples concerns are extremely rational.
The council says ministers must change their philosophy on the “science of risk” in order to handle future problems better.
It also calls on the government to declare innovations such as GM food as unsafe, until they can be proved otherwise.
