Grain futures down as Sterling gathers strength

UK GRAIN futures fell again today, as Sterling continued to rise against other European currencies.

The Pound is now worth DM3.04 against the German Mark and Fr10.19 against the French Franc.

LIFFE futures for old-crop wheat fell in response. May contracts were down 35p to £76.90/ tonne at midday today (Friday). July contracts were down 45p to £78.80.

New-crop wheat fell by 25p for all months. Contracts are now worth £79.00 (November), £81.00 (January 98), and £83.00 (March 98).

Barley futures were untraded.
