Grain market update


Wednesdays trading – 27 August 1997

WITH rain over the whole of the UK preventing any further harvesting, spot demand stimulated prices.

Sterling then opened lower and the futures market started £1 higher. However, UK wheat is more expensive than Danish and on a parity with French, which should make the deferred positions particularly vulnerable to price.

Later in the day , Sterling rallied slightly, making UK wheat even more expensive against equivalent origins.

  • French FOB spot wheat value: FFr 902.50 (£ 91.71)
  • Chicago September wheat at close: $ 3.66 (£ 81.89)
