Grain market update
Weekends trading – 28 August-1 September 1997
THE weather continues to cause concern and, with an estimated 50% still to cut in parts of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, quality is almost certainly going to suffer, giving us a lower exportable surplus but of unsaleable quality at present.
Firmer Sterling pushed prices sharply down on Friday afternoon as Continental shippers appeared keener to sell the forward market. September feed wheat is now valued at £80-83 ex-farm, depending on quality and location. September barley is valued at £73-74 ex-farm, depending on location.
Chicago wheat closed marginally up as concerns over the El Niño weather pattern mounted.
