With the Great British Beef Week (23-30 April) now just days away there’s plenty on this year’s menu to work up an appetite.
Now in its second year, the initiative was launched to promote the quality and versatility of Red Tractor quality assured British beef.
To mark the start of the event on St George’s Day there will be a photoshoot with Jim Paice in Westminster, involving a tractor, which has been organised by the NFU.
Campaign champions Ladies in Beef have also enlisted the help of actress and farmers daughter Lynda Bellingham to help highlight the cause.
One of the founding members, Minette Batters, said: “I don’t think you could have anybody better. Lynda is a farmer’s daughter and she believes in the cause. In the world we live in we wanted someone who could relate to the consumer, rather than fellow farmers.”
This year the ladies are raising money for the Help for Heroes charity, to raise money for injured soldiers.
“Help for Heroes started in my village in Downtown [near Salisbury], so I’ve grown up with it. It’s a very worthwhile charity and it’s a very good way to get the message across.”
The week has been strongly supported by the NFU and EBLEX and has also been backed by major supermarket chains, including Tesco, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons, who will be featuring a special logo on beef products during the week.
To inspire people to cook with British beef the ladies have also created a variety of delicious recipes, including a dish with a twist – aromatic beef with orange and apricots.
